All,

Just a quick update. Just about finished with adding all of those decals to the bombers and fighters for my IJN Akagi. Will get pictures out in a day or too. My goal is to have the final pictures out by the end of the week.

Progress on the Ryujo so far -

She's mostly painted, ready for some small details I hope to add this weekend.

I finished decaling all of the planes for my 3 deck IJN AKAGI. Those decals were a challenge due to the decal being larger than the surfaces they were going on. A sharp Exacto blade and an Optivisor I was able to get it done. Not the best work but at 1/700 scale no one at home will know but me...Ha!

Here a few photos of the commissioning.

I cannot find the Flattops campaign in the gallery to post the final photos, do we have one?

Mark,

Akagi! That is some impressive work. The weirdest iteration of one of the IJN's weirder ships never looked so good, and all those tiny planes really make her pop!

Tim,

Thank you for the kind remarks. I agree it is a weird design but with those planes on deck she looks look sharp.

Thomas,

Thank you, I wish I could. There are a couple of armor group builds I need to get out the door real soon.

Ryujo is basically done, ready to be placed in its ocean...

I had brush-applied a glossy Future acrylic coat over the model to help secure the flight deck decal, which worked well – but now I face the prospect of applying a final clear coat to dull it down. This isn’t that hard, but I’m always apprehensive with this step as I have experienced disasters before with clear coats! Coatings that refused to dry, flat coats that turned the model a frosty white...
the HORROR!

I’ve tried numerous types of clear coat, but the best results so far have been with airbrushed “flat Future” i.e., Future acrylic with Tamiya Flat Base (X-21). The Flat Base is a clear additive used to dull down acrylic paints; it does the same when added to Future.

I used it on a pair of 1/200 scale C-47s I did last year:

I don’t remember the ratio of Future to Flat Base (something like 10:1), but I liked the slight sheen it gave the planes, and I still have some of the mix left over from that project so... wish me luck!

Looks fantastic Tim!

I had this grand plan to build the USS Iwo Jima. Or at least as much as I could before the end of the campaign.

I opened the box and that was it, realized I had lost my mojo and burned out (again). Happens every couple months so I am taking a break. 3 unpainted tanks and a half built Ticonderoga class cruiser are on the shelf. My work desk has been cleaned and tidied up. Waiting for the mojo to return...

Tim,

I can understand your concern. While reading other forums I have come across a lot of horror stories on how their clear coat ruined their paint work.

So far on all of my armor and ship models I used Matte Varnish either from Grumbacher or Artists Matte Varnish from Winsor & Newton without any issues. Never tried the clear coats from model paint companies such as Testor, MIG, AK, etc.. so I cannot contest the quality of their products.

My Akagi I just posted the other day was coated with Winsor & Newton Artist Matte Varnish.

I hope your pick of finishes works out for you. Your carrier is looking awesome.

A bit of work on the Gannet.

Canopies masked.

The interior dark grey painted on canopies, and the refuelling probe housing fitting.

Everything sprayed TS 29, which is a good match for Sky.

The spinner tacked together and sprayed white. It will have two black bands between the props.

Cheers

Si,

I know nothing about modelling aircraft. Would it be safe to say that all that is left is assembly, decals and weathering? If so nice progress.

Si,

Your Gannet is looking good, but with only two weeks left you're gonna have to work fast!

Thanks Mark.

Saratoga’s strike group was led by Commander Harry D. Felt who watched the attack from scattered cloud cover and noted that Ryujo turned in fast circles “like a waterbug” while trying to evade the American planes...

Thanks for the very kind comments guys, more masking and painting first.

Assembly done.

I have since applied a gloss coat, will hopefully get the decals on today / tomorrow.

Cheers

Si,

Nice paint work, crisp dividing lines between the paints. Never happens with me, I always have a spot where the paint manages to get under the tape.

Si,

Your Gannet is coming together nicely, looks like you are on track to finish by May!

Do we have a Gallery page for the campaign yet?

Likely more luck than judgement Mark,

I generally get the same problem, and as I use Tamiya AS29 for the Sky, touching up is tricky.

Thanks for your kind comment.

Cheers
